SOUNDTRACK RESEARCHThe genre of our film is going to be Romance. Because of the genre we have chosen we needed to be very carefull about what music we used to be able to create the full effect of the opening sequence. We researched many different songs and finally came to a conclusion of which we felt was the best one for the actions and narrative/voiceover that will be used in our opening sequence. Here are some of the songs that we researched and our feedback from peers and group members about why we felt it did or did not fit our film opening or genre.
Although this song is a very romantic love song which is one aspect of what we are looking for, we found it to cringy for the story life that we were trying to portray. Also, our film opening will consist of a boys voice over speaking about loss and his girlfriend so jazz music wouldnt be approriate as you wouldnt be able to hear the boys voice properly because of the instruments used, unless you made it very loud. Other students in our class feel that this song wouldnt sound right if we are using a voice over because too much would be going on. Our teacher didnt like this song because she felt that it was too stero typical of our genre to have a song like this and its something the audience will expect.
This song sounds more depressing than romantic. As a group we felt it would be too busy (too many instruments playing at once) for the voice over to sound effective. Although words could be put over the top, much like George Michaels song Careless Whisper, it would have to be very quiet for the voice over to be heard effectively by the audience. Our peers feel that with the voice over and action we have chosen to take place we need a song that drops and picks up at the right times. This song seems to stay at a constant pace and beat/tone the whole way through only varying rarely. This is not what we are looking for as we need a song that can fit perfectly with our action etc.
This song we felt could be a possibility as one in which we could use in our opening sequence. It starts off with a nice tone and pitch, perfect for a voice over but we feel it may need to be slowed down as the character wont be speaking very fast in our voice over. Much like the other songs we chose but didnt like as much, the beat doesnt drop at the appropriate times and the beat and song itself stays the same throughout. On one and this could be good because we dont want too many instruments or different pitches etc but on the other hand we dont want the sog to be too boring or it will not be effective. Our class peers feel that with this song its a bit too up beat for the story line we are thinking about the opening sequence leading on to. The boy will be talking about loss and love for his girlfriend and we all feel that this song is a bit too modern and up beat for that. When the action starts and we see our characters walking towards eachother for example we want the song to change so that the audience can interpret that something may happen. There isn't any way we would be able to adjust this song to fit our needs
This is the song we have decided on using in our opening sequence. The way that the song starts is perfect as it has pauses and not over crowded sounds of instruments like some of the other songs we researched, only piano. At 0:31, the music drops slightly and as the song becomes more intense we will introduce our home video flashbacks, and aspect we are hoping to use in our opening sequence. From that point on until the next part of the music drops, there are small pauses inbetween where a drum can be heard. Being so equally spaced out we thought that this would be perfect for each home video to be shown so that it is all in sync making it more effective and emotional. A violin starts to be introduced as the song progresses making the song more emotional and effectively romantic. At 1:03 the song builds up a bit and it changes again, at this point we will be changing to a low mid tracking shot of our two characters, both girl and boy are walking. The shot will be showing their footsteps walking towards the ccentre of the screen and the camera will be rising up to a torso shot and then a full head shot as it zooms out. The audience will think, as the footsteps are in complete sync with the music which is building up, that the two characters are walking towards one another. At the point of roughly 1:24, the music changes again and slows down in pace as the audience notice that the two characters have infact walked completely past eachother like they dont even know eachother. This will make the audience try to interpret for themselves what is going on and what relations these two characters being shown actually have to one another. From this point onwards the music starts to fade and so the opening sequence begins to draw to an end. The character will start narrating again and when the music stops the character will continue to speak as he says in sync with the title of the film ''And the rest if history..''. As a group we felt that this song would be perfect for our genre and the emotions we are trying to portray and connect with the audience. After we told the class and our teacher what our plans were for the action and speak overs such as timings, etc, both the teacher and peers agree that this is the best song and our reasons are strong and valid. Everyone agree's that this will be the most effective song as it gives off the most emotion and will fit perfectly with what we want to do in our opening sequence.
