Film Opening Representation- Drive

1) What/who is being represented?
In the opening of Drive we are introduced to a dominant, good looking young man driving at what is clearly very late at night.
2) How is it being represented?
We are shown this via the actor used, lighting, choice of car he is driving and also the things the character is doing. Such as going home then leaving straight away.
3) How is the representation made to seem 'true', 'commonsense' or 'natural'?

4) Is Dyer or Baudrillards theory more appropriate in relation to the opening?

5) What is foregrounded and what is backgrounded? Are there any notable absences?

6) Whose representation is it? Whose interest does it reflect? How do you know?

7) How do people make sense of the representation? According to what codes?

8) Apply the theory of semiotics to the sequence, i.e. what are the signs and their associated meanings?

9) Considering semiotics, what as the audience, have you learnt about the overall direction of the films representation?

10) What way do you believe you have 'recieved' the meaning of the film: through preferred, negotiated or oppositional reading?
